Getting to Know the Medium of Watercolor

The Beginner Watercolor Class is intended for students new to the medium.   A general understanding of art concepts (drawing, perspective, etc.) is assumed, but not necessary.  The watercolor class is taught through instruction, exercises, in class painting and homework (recommended but optional).  The class focuses specifically on understanding the medium, its application and specific techniques needed to create completed paintings.  The use of color and texture in the compositions is also discussed throughout the course.  Three or more individual compositions will be covered including both seascapes and landscapes. The analysis of paintings will also be covered along with art history related to the compositions and techniques.   Nineteenth century American (specifically William Trost Richards), British and European artists will be discussed throughout the course.

Teaching Philosophy: Watercolor is an amazing medium, capable of creating great paintings in any style and any subject.  My style of painting is realistic with a focus on the impact of light and atmosphere in land and seascapes – very much a 19th century approach.  Classes are taught using this style, as in many ways all other styles are a proper subset that utilize the underlying technical and creative aspects of realism.  All of my classes, beginner through advanced, are as much about painting as they are about the medium of watercolor.  The beginner class has the most instruction specific to the technical aspects of watercolor – how does the paint make it on to the paper the way you want.  The intermediate class assumes an understanding of watercolor and moves to specific techniques and expansion of the palette – how is a desired effect created.  The advanced class assumes experience with watercolor and serves a true problem-solving studio for both color and complexity in the compositions - can watercolor do that (yes).  At the end of the classes, students at all levels should feel confident about taking on their own compositions.   My goal as an instructor in not to teach my students how to paint like me, but instead how to paint like they see the world.
