Linocarve- Printmaking Workshop

  • Howard's Art & Frames 1256 Dual Highway Hagerstown, MD, 21740 United States (map)

Learn the art of block printing during a weekly workshop. Open to beginners and printmakers of all levels. We will spend the workshop drawing a design, tracing, and transferring to our block and carving. Once carved we will ink and print. Two hours is not a ton of time to complete a full print, so it is best to come with a drawing or design in mind. If you need more time to carve and print you are more than welcome to come back a following week. Carved blocks and prints are yours to take home and print as you wish after the workshop.

Fees include the tools needed to carve and print, your linoblock and paper to print on. We will be carving 4x6” blocks of Speedycarve rubber which can be printed with block printing ink and ink pads.

Bio: My work is steeped in nostalgia and memories, a collection of hand pulled Lino prints encapsulating a sense of childhood. I make art to invoke feelings and thoughts I never want to forget when my mind won’t stop replaying the ones I never want to remember. From a childhood spent hoarding stickers until I found the perfect spot, to arcade days spent trying to beat my brother at skee-ball. Reliving times when things felt easier by printing items in colors of those times. Y2K era toys, vintage panelings and the neon squiggles of a bowling alley carpet. The way the smell of a hot parking lot reminds you of walking to buy an ICEE with change from the sofa. Printmaking became my medium of choice because just as I never want to use up stickers as a child, the thought of only making one of something made me nervous. The feeling of carving a long straight line into linoleum with little resistance and the sound of the tacky ink as you roll it brings a sense of calm while I work. Making multiples of a single item is the best feeling as I see them lined up to dry as I take a deep breath.
